Cannot Believe it! Windows Vista Removed Dragging Dropping Files

As a Software Engineer, I have always appreciated the command prompt window inside of the Windows operating systems.

I have written many mini apps with commands.  Presently, I depend on batch files to deploy new source code to production and development servers. So, when I recently received my new laptop from work with Vista, I just expected the ability to drag and drop files onto the command prompt window to avoid having to type the batch file full path.

To my surprise, this old useful feature was missing. I figured perhaps there's a registry tweak to turn this feature back on, so I immediately looked online for an answer. No, no registry tweak. Microsoft intentionally removed it. Poor decision on the part of Microsoft.

Well, I imagine techies all over the world complained about this decision, since Windows 7 Beta now has this feature again.

Don't worry Vista users. I found a free third party application named SendToToys that includes the command prompt.

All you have to do is install it, then browse to the batch file (or any file) you would like to run, right click and select "Command Prompt". Voila!!! No typing or having to copy and paste! Works like a charm. At time of this blog, the latest version of SendToToys was 2.5.
